Virgil Abloh, the man behind Louis Vuitton Men’s Spring-Summer 2019 Fashion show is breaking boundaries and revolutionising fashion.
Virgil Abloh has been all over the internet these past few days, taking the reigns as creative director for Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2019 men’s collection show for Paris Fashion Week. The runway show garnered much appraise and attention with its bright, blooming and lively colours and inclusiveness, something the world has been waiting for. But really though, who is Virgil Abloh and why should we care?
As a Ghanian-American fashion designer, Abloh’s creations are apparently designed to give a voice to the people who appreciate fashion and luxury, but often feel marginalised or left out of the conversation. This motto for his creations has been woven through each of the clothing line’s he has created.
Pyrex Vision was Abloh’s first official streetwear line, known for its bold message, ‘The Youth Will Always Win’. Following the Pyrex, Off-White was Abloh’s second baby. Off-White is Abloh’s clothing line known for its eye-catching, unforgettable black and white stripe trademark. Since opening its doors in 2013 has amounted momentous success, with illustrious label being donned by the likes of Jay-Z, ASAP Rocky, Justin Bieber and Drake to name a few.
Since March 2018, Abloh has been closely collaborating with Louis Vuitton as Creative Director for their men’s wear collection. This collaboration has allowed Abloh to heartedly interject his own stylistic DNA into the well-established Louis brand, which has pushed this historic fashion house forward into the progressive and fast-paced contemporary age.
His labour’s cam to fruition at the Spring 2019 men’s collection for Louis Vuitton runway show, positioned within the decadent greenery of Palais Royal, Paris. The runway trickled a mix and match of colours, opening with the angelic yet bold colour, white, which interestingly changed in tone slightly as the models walked above each rainbow hue on the mesmerising runway. There were numerous fluoro oranges, yellows and abundant sweetened pastels which all made for a vibrant and vast tenacious colour palette. The show’s heavy contrast of colours was surprisingly, incredibly cohesive which worked as a statement to reflect the contemporary ‘connected’ culture of the world today, something Abloh does so well when it comes to fashion. ‘Accessomorphosis’ was one takeaway from the show, as Abloh purposefully and rather cleverly allowed his accessories to morph and blend into the clothing garments seamlessly easily.
Like every typical fashion show some big names took front row seats including the likes of Rihanna, ASAP Rocky, Kylie Jenner, Travis Scott, Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West, one of Abloh’s mentors. Additionally, Abloh invited 3000 local Parisian designers, donning coloured shirts, to be a part of his abundant audience alongside his kaleidoscopic runway. In essence, this show once again proves that there is more to fashion than what meets the eye, proving in this day and age anything really is possible.
