Ella Mai is one chick making moves, sprinkling a generous touch of honesty and a whole lotta top-notch vibes into our headphones.
It was the summer of 2015, Mai was studying at the British and Irish Music Institute trying to pave a way for herself in music.
From there she realised the power of social media in making her dreams a reality, turning to Instagram and began posting clips of herself singing without actually anticipating the hype that would follow.
One of her earliest and most memorable song covers was her own original take on Fetty Wap’s iconic ‘679’ track for her 500 followers at the time, which now exceed one million.
Just scrolling through her Instagram you’ll find high calibre covers spanning from household names such as Chris Brown, Kanye West, Michael Jackson and Tupac.
It wasn’t long until Mai snatched the attention of DJ Mustard who direct messaged her asking if she was already signed to a label and her current situation.
Within days Man was exclusively jetted out to link up with DJ Mustard in New York, following his performance at the 2015 MIA Festival in Philadelphia.
She was instantly signed to his 10 Summers imprint and over the period of just five weeks they recorded three EP’s.
Touring towards the end of last year with H.E.R. alongside one of her idols, Chris Brown she told LA Times was a ‘surreal experience’.
It only seemed right for Brown and Mai to drop a collaboration which was titled, ‘Watchamacallit’ which peaked to 7 on the 2018 Billboard Charts.
But even more monumental was her iconic ‘Boo’d Up’ track which broke the record for the most weeks at No. 1 of any song by a woman on the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Airplay Chart.
So, what are you waiting for fam, go hop on some sweet Ella Mai tunes right here.
