It wouldn’t be the end of the week without some new music and we recommend you plug into Arlissa.
Arlissa Rupert, known as Arlissa, is only 25 years old and at 15 she set her first foot in a studio and it was up from there.
Always growing up singing around the home, it wasn’t until she was 14 that she began to take it more seriously and from there she started writing songs.
At 19 she snapped up a record deal with Capitol Records and released three singles, as well as nabbing a collaboration with Nas.
In due time, Arlissa found that Capitol wasn’t the right fit, as she began to feel a pressure to divert away from her honest self and the original direction she wanted to pursue.
One thing that made her really stand out was her ability to nab spots on the UK Pop Radar and make BBC’s Sound of 2013 Poll without any album or single out, alongside the likes of Aluna George, The Weeknd and CHVRCHES.
In 2013, she dropped her first single ‘Sticks & Stones’ which was described as a ‘stomping break-up anthem’ and ‘a fierce pop song’.
But Arlissa told DefJam although the single received a positive reception it wasn’t entirely authentic.
“It was all too much banking on something that wasn’t 100% authentic.
“I was invested but I’m lucky I learnt it quite young, the thing I didn’t know was that I had more power to voice my opinion and at the end of the day it was my career, not their career,” she said.
The one track we are seriously diggin’ big time is her collaboration with Jonas Blue on an EDM version of her song, ‘Hearts Ain’t Gonna Lie’.
The first released acoustic version of ‘Hearts Ain’t Gonna Lie’ received over a million views in less than a week, this was really the start of her DIY mission, releasing her own music online.
This tune definitely ticks the box of ‘breakthrough track’ in my opinion, Arlissa sings over a rather energetic remix, really sets the scene for the next phase of her vibrant music journey.
“I had no management, no following, but to see the feedback made me realise that I can do this.
“I had options and they were right in front of me the whole time,” she said.
Just when you thought that was it, ya gal is even more pumped as her forthcoming studio album, ‘The Broken-Hearted’ is set for release later this year.
Here are ya gal’s top three Arlissa favourites for your weekend playlist.
