Who Am I Listening To: VanJess

Need some soothing tunes you can play chillin’ out at the beach and also in the bathtub at the end of a long day? Then your answer is VanJess.

If Victoria Monet, Jhene Aiko and Kali Uchis had a child then VanJess would definitely be it.

The Nigerian R&B duo is composed of sisters Ivana and Jessica Nwokike, the gals began their career performing covers to some of their favourite tunes on YouTube.

One of their videos covering Drake’s ‘Headlines’ ended up becoming a viral success and it was from this moment they decided to take music on more seriously.

In 2011, the duo levelled up, hired a manager and began recording in a proper studio.

Throughout the years the gals have gained prominence, supporting the ‘Louder Than Words’ campaign in 2012, making appearances on VH1 and releasing their debut EP, ’00 till Escape’ which charted in the iTunes top ten and trended worldwide.

That’s not all, they’ve even toured with Little Sims and Masego.

In 2018, they dropped their debut album, ‘Silk Canvas’ which featured some pretty solid collaborations with Masego, GoldLink, Lil Sims and Kaytranada to name a few.

If you’re a fan of silky smooth ’90s R&B vibes then ‘Silk Canvas’ is your record.

From the moment you press play, it becomes apparent these gals definitely know how to delight their avid listeners with their tightly-knitted, well-versed harmonies and cohesive vocals taking the nostalgia of ’90s R&B to a whole new level.
