New On The Block: Tems

Want to hear a sound that is transforming culture and conversation? Tems is ya gal.

British-Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, is redefining Nigerian music.

When you press play on her tunes, be prepared to be astounded by her undeniably unique urban sound that takes on elements of alternative R&B and neo-soul genres.

Growing up in Lagos before moving across to the UK, Tems was raised by her single mother alongside her older brother.

Noticed by her music teachers, she spent most of her childhood singing alongside her brother’s guitar accompaniments which included performing mini concerts in his room.

For Tems, much of her musical knowledge is self-taught.

In 2018, she dropped her major hit ‘Try Me’, which to this day has already amassed over 5 million views on YouTube.

What makes ‘Try Me’ so special is its connection to the struggle and hardship in Tems’ hometown, Nigeria.

“I think in Nigeria there’s a lot of hardship and struggle and I think struggle is something everyone can relate with.

“‘Try Me’ is about breaking out of the struggle,” she said.

As one of the top artists to watch, just last year she was recruited by US singer, Khalid to join him and Davids on an Afrobeats remix of ‘Know Your Worth’.

In essence, Tems connection to music isn’t just linked to her talent but rather her tapestry of past experiences which she intentionally merges with her future aspirations which is what draws many into her delightfully intriguing sound.

In essence, her music is something designed for your mind, body and soul.

Let’s get into ya gal’s top three Tems picks for ya playlist this week.
